Motley reCruetment: Kings of metal straddle their rightful thrones

EDMONTON -- A whole new legion of reCruets were initiated into the wicked ways of Motley on Saturday night.

Old fans and thousands of young teens -- some with their mothers -- learned to Shout At the Devil and ogle scantily-clad women as the kings of hair-metal reclaimed their rightful thrones at Rexall Place.

For a few moments, it felt like it was going to be a repeat of Velvet Revolver's extravaganza on Tuesday.

Girls flashed their breasts. Guys cheered as if they had never seen a pair. The musicians were a wee bit slow getting to the stage.

"The feelgood band of the decade!" was the snarky intro delivered for Velvet Revolver, either in an attempt to steal the Crue's thunder or take a shot at Vince Neil and the real Dr. Feelgood troopers.

But once the curtain lifted on Motley's circus tent, there really was no comparison between the two gigs.

In terms of production and sound quality, the '80s-metal rockers cruecified Velvet Revolver -- using claymation films, sexy gymnasts, motorcycles, evil clowns, smoke, flames and a 10-minute intermission to stun and temporarily blind the sold-out crowd of 13,500.

As an added bonus, fans could actually hear Neil's glorious munchkinized metal screams and Nikki Sixx's throbbing bass above Tommy Lee's barrage of drums and Mick Mars's brake squealing guitars -- unlike Velvet Revolver's unfortunate wall of mud.

Wait a minute ... intermission? At a Crue show? Surprise!

Fans were in for a bigger surprise when they realized they couldn't buy any more beer -- sales were cut off shortly after the Motley ones got on stage. "Make sure you put that in your review," yelled one fan.

OK, done.

Perhaps the break was for the best.

During the first 10 songs, including Looks That Kill, the Crue seemed to flag at times -- letting some numbers go on for too long and losing the momentum of the crowd.

But after returning to the stage on their crazy bikes, the Crue's revs were in the red as they peeled through Girls, Girls, Girls, Danger and their intergalactic anti-love ballad, Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away).

Fans weren't going away mad after tMotley's set -- the rockers not only played their hits, they shook out a few oldies such as Too Fast For Love and Too Young To Fall In Love. Mars, backed by 18 amps, didn't look like he was going to fall over -- he cranked out his skyscraping riffs and often looked stronger than Ozzy Osbourne.

Sixx repeatedly (and endearingly) swore at the crowd while Lee stood at his drum kit, bashing his cymbals or stretching his torso as he raised one of his sticks in the air.

Neil, who looked bloated during his last local appearance, seemed like an 18-year-old, bounding across the stage and raising his microphone stand, as if planting the flag on the corpses of all the Crue's competitors.

Not that many bands can even try to match Motley -- there seems to be a dearth of rockers who espouse the freewheelin' hedonism embraced by Velver Revolver and the Crue.

Today's emo/screamo bands are too sensitive and angst-ridden to party. Artier rock outfits, such as Franz Ferdinand and the Killers, look too fey for blue-collar fans while rappers -- the only real hedonists -- seem too menacing even if they rhyme about parties, girls and carry goblets of crunk juice.

No wonder the Crue's so-called comeback tour is such a success.

If the group's August 2 show isn't sold out yet, it will be soon. Get 'em while you can.
