Monsters of metal

MIKE ROSS, EDMONTON SUN

Send in the clowns? They're already here. Yes, Motley Crue is back - our favourite bunch of Hollywood rock clowns to have popped out of the '80s to taunt the established boundaries of decorum and good taste. This time they are bigger and badder than ever. Just ask them. Just ask the fans.

Last night's sold-out concert at Rexall Place was literally a circus of excess, bad taste and decadence. A filthy circus tent revealed a carnival of unhealthy, unwholesome fun, hit after hit after hit and one wacky circus stunt after another. You could almost smell the elephants. Or maybe that was something else.

We know these clowns. We love these clowns. They're almost like cartoon characters - the Fantastic Four. There's Vince Neil, the cocky, arrogant, in-yer-face frontman who greeted 13,500 screaming fans by calling us "motherf---ers!" Gosh, we love that. It's a term of endearment in the twisted world of the Motley Crue circus. There's Tommy Lee, the wildman behind the drum kit. No one knows what he'll do next. Maybe not even him. Don't forget Nikki Sixx, whose very name is a circus. He asked the fans if anyone either got high or had oral sex to the music of Motley Crue back in the day. There was general affirmation.

"Well, that's our f--ing job!" he replied.

Talk about capturing the Zeitgeist of 20 years ago for people today. And finally there's Mick Mars, who doesn't say much, yet his guitar seems to be the musical heart and soul of this band. His riffs drove the songs. He's Motley Crue's real secret weapon.

Together they are greater than the sum of their parts.

The overriding attitude last night was "more is more." Why have one scantily-clad babe rubbing the band members on stage when you can have three? Yes, and have them rub each other. Dangle the girls from wires as they writhe about. Get them to crawl around the floor. Why have five explosions per song when you can have 10? Bring on the smoke, the sparklers. Blow stuff up. Why not have the band members ride choppers on stage?

Might as well hire a midget while they're at it. Bring him out in a leather jacket so people can laugh at how short he is. And why not bring "Satan" on stage the day the Pope dies?

Sure, this show may have been more hype and flash than actual "art" - this "greatest hits" show was pretty much the same one they gave last time around, just bigger and louder - but the entire event was a chance to let loose one's inner evil clown. An opportunity like this doesn't come every day. Twice this year, though. (The Crue Circus returns Aug. 2).

Motley Crue comes with a sudden renewal of popularity that can only be explained by sex. From Girls, Girls, Girls to Too Fast for Love to Piece of Your Action to Hell on High Heels to Dr. Feelgood, all of Motley Crue's songs are about sex. We heard them all. Dirty sex. Shameful sex. Dangerous sex. Except for the songs about Satan, like the show-opening Shout at the Devil, the Crue's music is all about sex. Face it: In the six years since the Crue last delighted us with their bad-boy antics, rock 'n' roll has been a bit whiny and decidedly unsexy.

There's little else that dares to be so brazen, so obvious, so obsessed with the pleasures of the moment. The show even had a "plot" of sorts, a Claymation video of the band members that dealt with one last gig on the eve of global annihilation. These clowns may know more than they let on. Or perhaps I'm reading too much into it. It was just a Motley Crue concert.
